Instructions to enhance your photos

Believe it or not, I used the same script (Matlab code) to enhance all the images that are posted on this page. As I explained in a previous post, I don't expect this script to work for all images (particularly the ones taken under extreme low-light conditions), but they should work for the majority of your photos. Naturally, you can tweak the settings that I used to make your photos look even better since some images or cameras have more pronounced problems that others.

Since I'm not a web-development guy instead of turning my Matlab code into a web-app, I instead checked out several free photo editors (no software installation or registration needed). You can check them out at Free Photo Editors, along with instructions on how to use them to apply the adjustment that I most often use to enhance my photos.

After trying all these editors out, I chose to use the Picnik editor since it enabled me to re-produce a very similar type of enhancement that my script applies. Picnik lets you use sliders to make adjustments to your photos. Below I show the Picnik settings that I used, along with step-by-step instructions to show you how you can do the same for your photos:

SETTINGS

Exposure: 15 (see 'adjust contrast non-linearly' section below)
Exposure/Advanced/ check 'Local contrast' and set strength to 33% (see 'adjust local contrast' section below)
Color Saturation: 7 (see 'adjust color saturation' section below)
